Fluent Inc., the world leader in commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, is seeking a User Interface Design Engineer to help develop user interfaces for new products based on Fluent's next-generation software development platform. Fluent Inc. develops, markets and supports several commercial CFD software products and is the premier CFD software company with thousands of user sites worldwide in a variety of industries.

Position Summary and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work as a member of highly skilled and motivated project teams to develop new CFD products emphasizing ease-of-use and productivity. By following Fluent's user-centered design (UCD) approach, the candidate is expected to contribute to all aspects of user interface and interaction design. This includes:

  • Plan all UI activities for a specific product
  • Perform user and task analysis through interviewing, profiling, focus groups, product concept testing
  • Develop user interface requirements
  • Lead the GUI and interaction design from initial paper prototypes through working prototypes to the final product user interfaces
  • Follow established user interface guidelines to ensure consistency of look-and-feel with that of other products based on Fluent's next-generation application framework
  • Plan and conduct usability evaluation and testing through the UI development stages and after product release
  • Contribute to the improvement of Fluent's user-centered design process

The position entails interaction with:

  • Product market managers (for user and task analysis, customer interviews, etc.)
  • Development team, including testing and documentation (for development and implementation of designs, and feedback on usability)
  • UCD group leader and UI engineers for other products (to compare notes, collaborate on usability testing and design activities, and ensure consistency across products)
  • Support engineers and product support managers (for feedback on usability)
  • Sales engineers (for feedback on demoability)
  • Customers (for user and task analysis, usability testing, and other types of evaluations of usability)

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Design, Human Factors, HCI, or related discipline
  • Experience with user-centered design of commercial software and/or web applications
  • Formal training in user interface design and usability
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAE or other engineering analysis software is a strong plus
  • Graphic design experience is a plus
