We have an opening for an experienced User Experience (Design & Usability) Manager to lead the SQL Server Design/Usability (D/U) team. This person will be responsible for ensuring that the D/U team (comprises of Product/Interaction Designers and Usability Engineers/User Researchers) is actively delivering strong business value through high-impact design and usability initiatives, as well as providing user experience design leadership, and vision work for future product releases. The continued growth and development of this team is an important factor in creating customer value through the delivery of world-class user experiences.

You will be a user experience thought-leader in this space, driving the long term business vision and goals in this area, and translating them into reality. As the SQL D/U Manager, you will work with your team on the scoping, planning and the execution of design & usability activities while demonstrating the ability to drive process improvements, encourage innovation, and execute and deliver to firm deadlines. Additional management activities will include developing staff performance objectives, completing reviews, and guiding individual career paths. We need a person who knows how to keep a team moving, drives effectively for results, solves hard problems, thinks critically, and has good technical aptitude.

Strong cross-group collaboration skills are required for this position as you will be working closely with the leadership of the SQL Product teams, the User Assistance (documentation) team, and the Global Engineering team, to scope and execute on business objectives. Good written and verbal skills are important as you will be responsible for communicating key messages to your team and across other groups within the organization. Multi-tasking is required, as a portion of your time will be spent identifying and managing consultant resources to augment employee contributions.

Qualifications include a degree in Design (interaction design, industrial design, visual communications, or related field), Psychology, HCI, Human Factors, or something similar, with 7+ years in the software industry. At least 2+ years of management experience, preferably with design/usability teams, in larger organizations. Previous experience working with enterprise server products or Enterprise applications is highly desirable. Proven ability to work in a fast-paced product environment, with strong strategic leadership and thinking will dictate your success in this position. A combination of design and usability/user research skills is critical for working in this multi-functional team, as well as a good understanding of their application within the product development cycle.
