User Experience Design Intern

Duration: Full-time for 3 months (with a possibility of extension or a full time position)
Group: SAP User Experience – Standards

Job Description:

SAP is a leading provider of enterprise software applications. SAP's User Experience group is responsible for the user experience of SAP enterprise applications. The group conducts user research and designs user interfaces for the next generation of applications.

Your primary responsibility will be to work closely with and assist User Experience Designers in the UI Standards Team to define next generation user interfaces. This can include:

  • Implement UI prototypes, storyboards and screen mockups that will be used to communicate UI concepts to both management and potential users for their feedback.
  • Participate in user validation activities including user research and usability testing.
  • Present designs to User Experience team and work with Interaction Design Lead to translate feedback into effective and innovative user experiences.
  • Work collaboratively with Usability Engineers and other user experience designers to define and improve the user experience for SAP's software applications.

Qualifications:

  • Completed a Bachelors degree or course work for a Masters degree for Interaction Design, Information Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human Computer Interaction or Human Factors,
  • Skills with design and media tools, such as Flash, Flex, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Scripting experience with JavaScript and ActionScript is a big plus.
  • Experience with Visio is desired but not required.
  • Understanding of business intelligence analytics is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the user-centered design process.
  • A team player with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

  • Must have an on-line portfolio for review
  • Experience with multimedia tools, such as Adobe Director, Flash, Flex and Photoshop + JavaScript/HTML.
  • Experience with MS PowerPoint, Visio and Word a plus, but not required.
  • Familiarity with the user-centered design process.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

Educational Requirements (degrees, class completion, etc.)

  • Completed a Bachelors degree or course work for a Masters degree for Interaction Design, Information Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human Computer Interaction or Human Factors, Focus should be more towards design and multimedia and less on CS

User Experience Design Intern

Group: Business Process Renovation Team (BPR)

Position Description

The Business Process Renovation team (BPR) is a global innovation group at SAP Labs. We focus on creating user delight through designing and implementing solutions that meet and exceed real user needs and wants. BPR reports to Henning Kagermann, CEO of SAP, and our projects are sponsored by SAP's Executive Board. SAP is the world's largest inter-enterprise software company and the world's third-largest independent software supplier overall. BPR is currently looking for a user experience design intern (flexible start date, duration min. 3 months, max. 6 months, located in Palo Alto, CA). We need a candidate who relishes solving tough design challenges, and who is passionate about creating innovative product experiences. Intern Responsibilities

  • Conduct end-user research to explore, uncover, and analyze real user requirements (and capture them in user requirements specifications)
  • Promote the synthesis of end-user design research into effective visual communication pieces (communicated through user experience specifications).
  • Engage collaboratively and flexibly with team members in prototype scenario development and flow charting of the user experience
  • Play an active role in all aspects of the design process including identification of user needs, ideation, and exploration of design solutions, prototyping, and iterative end user validation.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Proven track record of out-of-the-box, innovative thinking and design
  • Well developed skills in flow charting user experience, data visualization, typography/layout (wire framing), sketching (story boarding, scenarios, rough layouts, mock-ups), and user interaction design (icons, interface elements) are critical
  • Proven track record of success with interactive media prototyping tools (e.g. Flash, Director, Lingo, PhotoShop, Indesign) and design and production skills for web-based projects and printed communication pieces are required
  • Passion for end-user focused software applications design and development with an appreciation and empathy for the entire software design process
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively engage and convey ideas to cross-functional technical and non-technical teams
  • Perspectives on current visual design trends, their impact on software design and end user interaction, and their implications for the design and development of enterprise software
  • Degree in one of the following preferred: Visual Design, Graphics Design, Interaction Design, Interface Design, Product Design, Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Design, or related programs.
  • 1-3 years professional work experience in visual end user focused design and/or relevant postgraduate education is a plus.
  • All candidates must have current student status (or must have graduated within the last 6 months).
