What is the group like?

The User Research group is a growing department with strong company support providing usability testing and user research to Consumer and Enterprise. We conduct a wide variety of research methods throughout the product cycle, with a growing emphasis on basic research with customers. We are part of the centralized User-Centered Design group including UI Designers and Graphics.

Job Duties:

  • Plans, develops and conducts user research
  • Collects, analyzes and interprets user and user task data
  • Writes reports and makes presentations
  • Develops research strategy and long-range plans
  • On Enterprise/Consumer products, web-sites and web applications
  • At different points in product development, from gathering requirements, to working on concepts, mock-ups, prototypes, through running code and already released products
  • Works with minimal supervision on multiple projects, including projects with multiple phases over long time-spans (3 - 18 months)
  • Understands and applies UCD principles, theories and concepts; works collaboratively with other UCD professionals; promotes user research throughout the company

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Has broad, hands-on experience in many techniques, including: usability testing, surveys, cognitive walkthroughs, expert/heuristic reviews, persona/profiles, card sorting, focus groups, customer site visits, and more
  • Has previous experience in large enterprise software, system administration, networks, security, storage, availability, compliance, and performance
  • Has proven track record of different kinds of research over the product life cycle
  • Bonus skills: prototyping, statistics (SPSS, SAS, other), participatory design, experience supervising / training junior staff

Education:

  • Degree in Human Factors, HCI, Cognitive Psychology, or related discipline
  • 5-7 years industry experience with B.A./B.S. degree
  • 3 - 5 years industry experience with Ph.D. degree.
