WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for an experienced Usability & Human Factors Engineer to join the User Interaction Design team in The Hartford's eBusiness Technology Solutions organization.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Experimental Psychology, or Educational Psychology desired.
  • Minimum of three years experience as a usability/human factors engineer in the web development arena.
  • Minimum three years experience with online design, information design, and interactive design, including a solid understanding of and experience with the web and web technologies.
  • Experience with hypothesis testing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Working knowledge of experimental design and descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Working knowledge of user profiling, task analysis, scenario development, user interface design, and usability evaluation methods.
  • Proven user interaction design skills and usability testing and evaluation experience.
  • A strong understanding of GUI design concepts, elements, theories and emerging technologies is necessary.
  • Experience with task analysis, and usability assessment methods.
  • Must be organized, independent, and self-directed.
  • Ability to travel to the user (agency) site as needed.

WHAT IS THE COMPENSATION OPPORTUNITY?

At the Hartford, our compensation philosophy is simple: we pay competitive base salaries and reward performance. The base salary for this position ranges from $65,000 to $75,000. In addition, you will be eligible to participate in our comprehensive benefits program including Medical, Dental, Life and Disability Insurance, a 401K Plan, an Employee Stock Purchase Plan and more.

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION?

The Usability Engineer responsibilities:

  • Become an integral part of a web development/e-commerce group whose focus is on user-centered design.
  • Contribute to the success of web based insurance tools/applications in the marketplace by conducting user studies in task analysis, user profiling, task scenario development, prototype development, and usability evaluation. You will be involved in iterative design and test processes, so a thorough understanding of constructing usability goals from business cost-benefit analyses and user data is critical.
  • Develop, administer, and analyze user preference, profile, and user interaction surveys.
  • Conduct competitive product analysis from a usability perspective.
  • Conduct primary usability research as warranted.
  • Work closely with customers, business and the development teams to play a lead role in user interface design.
  • Interview customers, conduct heuristic evaluations, run usability tests, analyze usability data and present findings.
  • Assist in educating business and IT partners on the value of usability and its practices.
