Design is at the heart of our client Whirlpool Corporation, a global consumer products company driven by innovation and design in their quest to help people manage and enjoy their lives by providing products that appeal to both their hearts and minds. They are searching for a Senior Human Factors/Interaction Designer to join their burgeoning Usability and Interaction Design team.

Whirlpool is developing an entirely new User Interface and Experience strategy. They need a Human Factors/Interaction Designer who would be excited to seize the opportunity to bring innovation to a product category, which is at a cross-roads and which is hungry to take advantage of rich new media for its next generation of UI. He/she will deliver new user experiences to the entirety of Whirlpool's family of home appliances – in all categories and across their multitude of brands – and will partner with multi-disciplinary teams of world-class product designers, software engineers, category engineers, and new media/visual designers, as well as external, strategic partners, to create user experiences that standout in the marketplace.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating, developing and implementing user interaction design
  • Modeling the user-centered design process throughout the product development process
  • Planning, developing and executing project plans, based on user-centered design principles and accepted product development processes
  • Creating interaction design concepts and roadmaps for regions and brands
  • Conducting human factors and usability studies at the appropriate times during product development
  • Managing project resources to deliver exceptional results against agreed to plans and timelines
  • Collaborating with other human factors and interaction design professionals to develop and grow a world-class organization

Requirements:

Balance of skills:

  • Outstanding user interaction design talent, demonstrated through a superior portfolio
  • Systems thinking
  • Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills
  • Strong project planning skills, including proposals, work breakdown schedules, resource planning, and project reviews
  • Demonstrated skill applying user-centered design practices, e.g., ethnography, user needs analysis, participatory design and usability testing
  • Ability to create and prototype designs using popular interaction design tools

Relevant experience/expertise:

  • Expertise in hard product design, particularly consumer handheld products, would be ideal. Very willing to consider medical and/or governmental/industrial products and systems, as well as rich media-driven software and web experience, coupled with a passion for or interest in developing UI for physical product
  • Experience working in accordance with rigorous product development processes

Criteria:

  • 4+ years of industry experience
  • Graduate degree in Human Factors, Interaction Design, Psychology or a related discipline is preferred.
